A guided approach to capturing your family’s stories, memories, and traditions in one month.
The holidays often bring families together, a time filled with stories, laughter, and memories that remind us who we are and where we’ve come from. It is also the perfect time to preserve those stories for the next generation.
You do not need a history degree or expensive tools to get started. With just a phone, a scanner, and a little commitment, you can create something lasting in 30 days: a simple archive your family will cherish for years to come. Here’s how to begin:
1. Pick a theme
Do not try to capture everything at once. Start with something specific, such as family recipes passed down through generations, stories of military service, or the journeys your family has taken across the country. A clear theme gives your project focus and keeps it manageable.
2. Record short interviews
Every family has a storyteller. It might be the aunt who remembers every detail, the grandfather with incredible life stories, or the cousin who brings the humor. Use your phone to record short conversations, even just five or ten minutes. These voices carry emotion and memory in a way that words alone cannot.
3. Scan five photos a day
Old photos have a way of getting lost over time. Commit to scanning just five a day. In a month, you will have 150 photos preserved digitally, enough to start building a living record of your family’s history.
4. Create simple captions
Do not wait until later to add context. While memories are fresh, jot down who is in the photo, where it was taken, and what was happening. A few words can turn a snapshot into a story.
5. Share your work
By day 30, you will have the foundation of a true family treasure. Share it with relatives and invite them to contribute names, dates, or stories you might have missed. What starts as a small project can grow into a living archive that brings your family closer, especially during the holidays when memories mean the most.

1 The 2025 Forbes ranking of America’s Best-In-State Wealth Management Teams, developed by SHOOK Research, is based on an algorithm of qualitative criteria, mostly gained through telephone and in-person due diligence interviews, and quantitative data. This ranking is based upon the period from 3/31/2023 to 3/31/2024 and was released on 01/09/2025. Advisor teams that are considered must have one advisor with a minimum of seven years of experience, have been in existence as a team for at least one year, have at least 5 team members, and have been nominated by their firm. The algorithm weights factors like revenue trends, assets under management, compliance records, industry experience and those that encompass best practices in their practices and approach to working with clients. Portfolio performance is not a criteria due to varying client objectives and lack of audited data. Out of approximately 11,674 team nominations, 5,331 advisor teams received the award based on thresholds. This ranking is not indicative of an advisor's future performance, is not an endorsement, and may not be representative of individual clients' experience.
